A CO2 laser does not carve wood. It burns a controlled line of it away — the beam heats the surface past the point where cellulose breaks down, and the wood leaves as smoke. What stays behind is a groove with a darkened wall, and almost everything that makes an engraving look good or look cheap is decided in the fraction of a second that groove is being formed.
This matters to you as a buyer for one reason: the same machine, the same file and the same settings will give you a beautiful result on one piece of walnut and a muddy one on the next. Here is what is actually going on.
Industrial engravers of this type emit infrared light at a wavelength of 10.6 micrometres. Wood absorbs that wavelength readily, which is why CO2 lasers are the standard tool for hardwood and why the same machine cuts acrylic and leather but bounces uselessly off bare metal. The beam is focused to a spot a fraction of a millimetre across; moving it faster removes less material, slowing it down removes more.
Two variables do the work: power (how hot) and speed (how long the heat sits in one place). High power and low speed cut deep and dark, and past a certain point they leave a burnt halo around every stroke. Low power and high speed leave a crisp line so faint you cannot feel it with a fingernail. The whole craft is finding the narrow band in between, for that species of wood.
Wood is not a uniform material. Density, resin content and grain direction all change how heat travels, so a setting tuned on one species is only a starting point on another:

Because the mark is a physical cavity in the wood rather than a coating, there is nothing to peel, fade in sunlight or wash off. It will wear only as fast as the surrounding surface wears — which on a keepsake kept in a drawer means effectively not at all. The honest caveat: an engraved surface has slightly more area for dirt and skin oil to sit in, so a piece handled daily will darken inside the lines over years. Most owners consider that an improvement.

For personalised work the practical advantage of the laser is not quality — a skilled carver beats it — but that every piece in a set of two hundred groomsmen gifts comes out identical except for the name.
Two machines do the work here, and they are not the same machine. A 150 W CO2 laser cuts the blanks; a 30 W CO2 marking laser does every engraving you see on a lid. The lower-powered one is the more delicate instrument: cutting is about getting through the board, engraving is about stopping at exactly the right moment.
There is no settings file we load and forget. Boards differ in density and moisture even within one species, so the operator adjusts each run against three requirements that pull against each other: enough depth to feel, enough contrast to read, and an edge that stays sharp rather than scorched. Ten years of doing this is mostly ten years of learning where those three stop cooperating.
The hard floor is resolution. Below roughly 1 mm of character height an engraving stops being legible on walnut — the strokes close in on themselves whatever the machine is doing. That one number decides more about a design than font choice does. It is why a long inscription has to move from the lid to the interior, and why we will tell you when a monogram is simply too small to survive being cut.
Two things happen before any of that. The wood arrives kiln-dried and then rests for a month in the workshop, which lets the fibre stress equalise; skip that and the box moves years later. Finished stock is held at 8–13 % moisture content, outside of which walnut warps. Everything is solid hardwood rather than veneer, so the engraving cuts into the same wood you see on the outside edge, and the surface is finished in clear lacquer.
